1996 Ford Ranger

Hello, I’m new to all this and have already purchased the full version, I’m wanting to use an Android tablet to run RealDash while I drive my 1996 Ford Ranger. I own an ELM327mini obd reader. Could anyone please explain the best way to set it up and any tips on using it with my 1996 Ford Ranger?

Here are instructions on how to establish connection with OBD2 Bluetooth adapter:

Good job! Well done!

Be careful with some older vehicles. I have a 2006 accord which had about a 1.5 second lag on updating information using OBD2 via Bluetooth.

My 2010 civic and TSX worked fine. I think it might have to do with older hardware on the ECU. Just try it out on the driveway revving the car and see if you notice a delay or not.

That is a fair warning. OBD2 is at the end of the day diagnostic connection, not a real time data display connection.

If ODB is not all that, what else would you suggest? Sorry new to anything beyond ODB. I have a 2011 Ford F250 that I’d like to use realdash, IF i can. Ive been using OBDlink for years and it connects right away and provides innumerable amount of data from the vehicle. It also has the ability to make custom dashboards

The 2011 would update the OBD2 faster. Again I think it’s also simply how old the ECU of the car is. I have a 7th gen accord which ran from 03 to 07, 2006, and it had a 1-2 sec lag. While my 2010 civic, which ran from 2006-2011 l, worked fine. So all I can assume since their years overlap some, was that the ECU changed and had newer/better parts.

So id recommend OBD2 fs with anything 2006 and newer depending on when the model year range starts. But definitely 2010+ I’ve seen no issues.

You could use canbus as well, I can’t tell you exactly how that works but there are other threads here describing that.
